Manganese is usually noticed in water because of a black or purple colour. Stains may appear on laundry or on plumbing fixtures. The water may also have a bitter taste. A water softener is the most effective way to remove manganese. At very high concentrations, manganese problems are most often linked to biofouling of the well. Treating biofouling will be a better approach to manganese problems in these cases than simply removing the manganese itself.
